MyLifeIsAverage

Life is pretty normal today.
Today I read that in Britain instead of saying "cupcake" they say "fairy cake". Never again will I say cupcake. MLIA

I'm almost positive that I've never heard said term.

[ - ]  Angel_of_MusicGood: 5Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I call them fairy cakes, but if they're bigger and more rounded then I call them cupcakes and if they're massive I call them muffins.

[ - ]  imfromscotlandGood: 4Bad: 21 year, 11 months ago
I would say fairy cake, I think it's less commonly used in england though, and a fairy cakes different, as they're usually smaller.

[ - ]  lazytoastGood: 5Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Plus they have wings.

[ - ]  MyBritishAccentMakesMeCoolGood: 21Bad: 31 year, 11 months ago
I'm British and I have never once said fairy cake i stead of cupcake. I hate how people insinuate that is how we English people talk. Gets annoying after a while *sigh*

[ - ]  kyserinGood: 4Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I hate this too. I think that we'd know what we say...

[ - ]  NotPumpkinGood: 5Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Me too, though I have made fairy cakes before. I generally call the shop-bought ones cupcakes, and the ones which I make fairy cakes.

[ - ]  oldjellybellyGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
Me too! I've heard them called that but only very occasionally =/

[ - ]  BElanna108Good: 4Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
The fairy cakes I buy have it written on the packaging. Everyone I know calls them fairy cakes. I don't know if I've ever eaten any referred to as "cupcakes". Does this make me an oddity? Does it matter if people insinuate that this is how we (British people) talk, as it's true?

[ - ]  deathtoelmoGood: 0Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
I think you said it twice in that OP... fail

[ - ]  autumnsfantasyGood: 19Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
Actually, fairy cakes are a type of cupcake where the top is cut off, it's hollowed out and filled with a cream. Then the top is put back on to look like wings.

[ - ]  deathtoelmoGood: 4Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
That is a nice fun fact :)

I read your username as "death toe lmo." I wonder what "lmo" meant for a while until I realized it was actually "elmo". Then I was embarrassed and looked around to make sure no one had seen my rare moment of stupidity.

[ - ]  imfromscotlandGood: 3Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
That's a butterfly cake, fairy cakes are usually just smaller cupcakes without the buttercream icing.

[ - ]  adelineroseGood: 2Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
actually thats a butterfly cake

[ - ]  keepitonwaxGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago

[ - ]  Emily_1994Good: 2Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
No they are a type of 'cupcake' or as we say in Britain (south Yorkshire anyway) bun.

[ - ]  surenahGood: 3Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
In Australia, fairy cakes are like a cupcake, but you cut the top off and put cream there, then stick the top back on like wings. but a cupcake is still a cupcake

[ - ]  GreyDayGood: 0Bad: 21 year, 11 months ago
I could've sworn that the official brittish spelling of fairy was faerie. That's what I learned from neopets anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

[ - ]  mediqueGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Faerie is a old, somewhat archaic, way of spelling it. And anyways, I call little ones fairy cakes and bigger ones cupcakes.

[ - ]  Emily_1994Good: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
We dont. LOL. Maybe when shakespeare was alive/

[ - ]  MadCowDiseaseGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Nope, Shakespeare used Fairy too.

[ - ]  KieleGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago

I'm British and I never EVER say fairy cake

[ - ]  amosffGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago

[ - ]  IdaBeeGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
Ditto. British and never call them fairy cakes

[ - ]  xEmmaxSophiexGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
WHOOOO!!!! fairy cakes are awesome!!!! although we do have cupcakes as well, but they're basically just pure sugar icing! (from sainsburys anyway) the muffins that the british make are the best though!xxx

[ - ]  poppinuallGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
A fairy cake is something different, it has 2 small pieces of cake stuck in the icing to look like wings. We have cupcakes too.

[ - ]  AlicefishGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I call them fairy cakes and I'm from Britain. Maybe it depends what your parents call them. But hey thats just me

[ - ]  MaraudersxxxGood: 0Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
qhoooooooooooooooooooo go britain! but as poppinuall said fairy cakes are different, we do also have cupcakes, but some people just say 'cake' or 'bun' (Y)

[ - ]  meggieeeeGood: 3Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
in england we do say fairy cake but they have wings and some of my friends say butterfly cakes cos they have wings. cupcakes are completely different and we have them too?!

[ - ]  beatlesgirl94Good: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
REPOST. Yes, we call them fairy cakes. Yay.

[ - ]  RawrWafflesGood: 2Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I don't call them fairy cakes. Fairy cakes are where you scoop the top off, break it in half, fill the hole with cream and put the halves in like wings

[ - ]  crayolaolaolaGood: 1Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
no thats a butterfly cake

[ - ]  FlurgonGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago

[ - ]  crayolaolaolaGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
fairy cakes are different things they're like little cakes that are decorated really pretty. We still call cupcakes cupcakes

[ - ]  EimiiiiGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I always thought Fairy cakes were buns that have extra sponge sticking out of the top that look like wings..hence FAIRY cakes? I call them buns xD

[ - ]  RynethGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I call fairy cakes fairy cakes, cupcakes buns and massive cupcakes muffins :D

[ - ]  jimmyjazzsGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I'm british. I call them sponge cakes or just cakes... Sometimes I use fairy cake...

[ - ]  FlurgonGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Ok, here in Britain we call cupcakes 'muffins' or 'sponge cakes'. 'fairy cakes' are 'sponge cakes' with the tope cut out, then in two, butter icing put in the top then the two sponge bits back on like 'fairy wings' QED - cupcakes are not fairy cakes - besides, ive already seen this post twice, so, double fail :/

[ - ]  mypetsockGood: 0Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
OP, did you also know that they dont call it britain they say Scotland, Wales, England, And sometimes ireland if they live in northern Ireland.

[ - ]  emi793Good: 0Bad: 11 year, 11 months ago
Ok right, I'm going to try and clear this up. I'm a Londoner, and as far as I know, cupcakes and fairy cakes are used pretty interchangeably, though I think in general fairy cakes are smaller and shallower if you are looking for a distinction. A cake with the top sliced off with cream and wings and stuff is called a butterfly cake. Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson agree with me. A muffin traditionally in England is a floury bun type thing that gets toasted and you put butter and stuff on at breakfast. However, the american usage refers to cakes. in England they refer to much larger versions of cupcakes that are generally quite moist compared to a spongey cupcake.

[ - ]  emi793Good: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
does that help??

[ - ]  kiyarikannibalGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
I'm english.. And I will NEVER call a cupcake a fairycake, They'll always be my little Cupcakes. =D

[ - ]  kiyarikannibalGood: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Actually, Fairy cakes are exactly like Cupcakes, I buy fairy cakes to decorate and then call them Posh Cupcakes. :/

[ - ]  minniemoo100Good: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Why do people always say 'british'?? We call ourselves English/Scottish/Welsh etc please? And yes, fairy cakes- what else? :D

[ - ]  MyLifeIsPeachyGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
yes you will, stop lying, you will forget about this in 10 minutes.

[ - ]  amanduhLeeIsMeGood: 1Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago
Peoples you should all go and jump off a roof and land in fairy cake because it's fun and squishy! I find this very funny how people freak out and become defensive because the "OP" read somewhere that people from England say this and then everyone gangs up on her because they think she is wrong. Bullies.

[ - ]  minniemoo100Good: 0Bad: 01 year, 11 months ago

Actually, in England we say fairy cakes or cupcakes. Actually, it's mostly younger children that say fairy cakes..

Yes, finally you have it right. Normally people in England say fairy cakes, except for me, I say cupcake.

actually, i live in britain and a cupcake and a fairy cake are two different things. a fairy cake is when you cut off the top of a cupcake, cut the top in half, put butter-icing on top and stick the two halves back on so it looks like wings (hence fairy cake). a cupcake is just an ordinary cupcake. however, the two terms are interchangable :-)

I just thought I'd point out that Britain isn't just this tiny little place where everyone speaks the same. Every town/city has a slightly different dialect.

Until very recently, i.e - when cupcakes suddenly became some sort of fashion accessory thing, I had only ever heard them called fairy cakes. Butterfly cakes are ones with the top centre cut out, filled with buttercream and the top halved and put on top like wings, and fairy cakes are any other little cake with a fancy topping, usually just plain icing sugar/water icing mixture, perhaps sprinkles etc. To me cupcakes are cakes with masses of sickly butter icing piped on top in a fancy, decorative way.

As someone Scottish, I can confirm that when I was younger, everyone called them fairy cakes, but now the word 'cupcakes' has taken over.
