Yay! That means I'm not the only one. He said the only other person that had actually seen him was you, so I had to ask to make sure I had the facts right...
I'm British and I have never once said fairy cake i stead of cupcake. I hate how people insinuate that is how we English people talk. Gets annoying after a while *sigh*
The fairy cakes I buy have it written on the packaging. Everyone I know calls them fairy cakes. I don't know if I've ever eaten any referred to as "cupcakes". Does this make me an oddity? Does it matter if people insinuate that this is how we (British people) talk, as it's true?
Actually, fairy cakes are a type of cupcake where the top is cut off, it's hollowed out and filled with a cream. Then the top is put back on to look like wings.
I read your username as "death toe lmo." I wonder what "lmo" meant for a while until I realized it was actually "elmo". Then I was embarrassed and looked around to make sure no one had seen my rare moment of stupidity.
In Australia, fairy cakes are like a cupcake, but you cut the top off and put cream there, then stick the top back on like wings. but a cupcake is still a cupcake
No one in 'britain' calls them fairy cakes you retards, we call them buns :| And faerie is the OLD english spelling, as in medieval england you twat ;|
WHOOOO!!!! fairy cakes are awesome!!!! although we do have cupcakes as well, but they're basically just pure sugar icing! (from sainsburys anyway) the muffins that the british make are the best though!xxx
qhoooooooooooooooooooo go britain! but as poppinuall said fairy cakes are different, we do also have cupcakes, but some people just say 'cake' or 'bun' (Y)
in england we do say fairy cake but they have wings and some of my friends say butterfly cakes cos they have wings. cupcakes are completely different and we have them too?!
I don't call them fairy cakes. Fairy cakes are where you scoop the top off, break it in half, fill the hole with cream and put the halves in like wings
Ok, here in Britain we call cupcakes 'muffins' or 'sponge cakes'. 'fairy cakes' are 'sponge cakes' with the tope cut out, then in two, butter icing put in the top then the two sponge bits back on like 'fairy wings'
QED - cupcakes are not fairy cakes - besides, ive already seen this post twice, so, double fail :/
Ok right, I'm going to try and clear this up. I'm a Londoner, and as far as I know, cupcakes and fairy cakes are used pretty interchangeably, though I think in general fairy cakes are smaller and shallower if you are looking for a distinction.
A cake with the top sliced off with cream and wings and stuff is called a butterfly cake. Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson agree with me.
A muffin traditionally in England is a floury bun type thing that gets toasted and you put butter and stuff on at breakfast. However, the american usage refers to cakes. in England they refer to much larger versions of cupcakes that are generally quite moist compared to a spongey cupcake.
Peoples you should all go and jump off a roof and land in fairy cake because it's fun and squishy! I find this very funny how people freak out and become defensive because the "OP" read somewhere that people from England say this and then everyone gangs up on her because they think she is wrong. Bullies.
actually, i live in britain and a cupcake and a fairy cake are two different things. a fairy cake is when you cut off the top of a cupcake, cut the top in half, put butter-icing on top and stick the two halves back on so it looks like wings (hence fairy cake). a cupcake is just an ordinary cupcake. however, the two terms are interchangable :-)
I just thought I'd point out that Britain isn't just this tiny little place where everyone speaks the same. Every town/city has a slightly different dialect.
Until very recently, i.e - when cupcakes suddenly became some sort of fashion accessory thing, I had only ever heard them called fairy cakes. Butterfly cakes are ones with the top centre cut out, filled with buttercream and the top halved and put on top like wings, and fairy cakes are any other little cake with a fancy topping, usually just plain icing sugar/water icing mixture, perhaps sprinkles etc.
To me cupcakes are cakes with masses of sickly butter icing piped on top in a fancy, decorative way.
Cupcakes:Muffins, with a layer of chocolate or something on top
Muffins:Kinda like mini cakes But with a puffy top
Fairy cakes:Mini cake with the top scooped out, icing put in, and then top cut in half and replaced as wings
