I recently started dating a guy with the last name "Black." Today, my little sister jokingly commented that we should name our kid "Jacob" in honor of Twilight. Silly sister, his name will be "Sirius." MLIA
Might I suggest the name "Jet" or "Crispin" that way, when you're pregnant you can say "What's crispin, Black, and lives in the oven?" Man, I'm jealous of people with that last name
RIP...
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Amelia Bones, Cedric Diggory, Charity Burbage, Colin Creevey, DobbyDirk Cresswell, Edgar Bones, Emmaline Vance, Fabian Prewett, Frank Bryce, Fred Weasley, Gellert Grindelwald, Gideon Prewett, Gornuk, Alastor (Mad-Eye) Moody, James Potter, Fang, Gregorvitch, Hedwig, Lily Potter, Mrs. Abbott, Nymphadora Tonks, Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, Sirius Black, Ted Tonks, Vincent Crabbe, Lavender Brown (unclear in book, Fenrir Greyback at least bit her, debatable)
And about fifty others who gave their lives in the Battle of Hogwarts on May second, 1998.
Did you seriously say RIP Gridewald?
I know Voldemort murdered him, but he was a mastermind of WWII in league with Hitler. If the muggles had gotten a hold of him, then he would have probably been sentenced to death at the Nuremburg Trials.
He was just in prison because Dumbledore didn't have the heart to kill his ex-lover. Which is understandable, but not RIP worthy.
Gridewald was evil.
I was born May 2! bahahah sorry i just had to say it since "The Hogwarts Battle" or what ever happened on that day. By the way MoonShoes Potter, you made my day. (:
You recently started dating him and you're thinking about kids with him already?
PLEASE do not tell him this, your relationship will be over faster than Liverpool FCs title hopes. (Over really quickly)
I'm 14 and pregnant and my bf loves me and he always wants to try for more babies even though i don't think that's possible when im already pregnant :)
(IM JOKING ABOUT THIS!!, but i do think you've pointed out a vital issue as this is happening to a friend of mine and shes totally oblivious to his ...'needs' She's in love, he has a 'friend with benifits' and nobody can get through to her that he's...'not the right guy') :/
hahaha, i would say jacob because i do love twilight, but definitely if it's a girl it should be Bellatrix (though i just realized the name bella is in that name =P)
only by marriage, she was born Bellatrix Black but married Rudolphus Lestrange. Remember? Because she was one of Sirius's 3 girl cousins Narcissa Black (malfoy) Andromeda Black (tonks) and then Bellatrix Black (lestrange)
That's the first person I thought of when I read Black. Harry Potter was around longer than Twilight, so it's always going to be loved more. I assure you that as soon as the fourth movie comes out, it'll die away in a year or so. HP on the other hand, is a legend. I doubt that it will fade away because of the impact it's had on people.
Besides, you see way more people dressing up as Harry and the rest of the gang than you do for Twilight characters.
And Harry's not gay. XD
Twilight sucks, nobody wants to name their kid after a pedophile werewolf.
Harry Potter rocks, I'm contemplating marrying a man with the last names "Granger", "Weasley", "Potter", or "Black", just so I can name my children after the greatest freaking characters/people who ever lived.
in my school eveyones really excited about new moon coming out on friday but even though i do like the twilight books, it annoys me because im counting down the days until the deathly hallows film comes out lol.
I think Sirius chose his animagus, and dog was a natural choice being named after the "dog star".
Harry Potter FTW! Sirius is a great choice for naming a son. =)
well.. if you look at the books, J.K. Rowling worked really hard to make sure a lot of things like that were correct; especially the mythology references. Pretty much every magical thing in the books existed in mythology or other similar beliefs like alchemy. Even the spells are drawn completely from latin roots. It's really interesting and it inadvertently teaches kids about these things
Both series are extremely well written and great fantasy novels. I enjoy reading both! I understand that you are entitled to your own opinion.
I did "bad" you however because it's not very nice to make fun of someone's name.
I won't debate with an opinion, but "well written" is a fact from a literary perspective, and...
Mary Sues, cliche plot, purple prose... and those are only the top three... Twilight has almost nothing worth reading from a literary perspective.
Actually, Sirius was named after the star, which is technically the "dog star", because his Animagus was a dog.
I don't see how his parents would know that his Animagus would be a dog, though...
Anyway, it still explains why she named him that.
I think that Twilight is extremely badly written; Stephenie Meyer has the writing skills of a third grader. It's disgusting. I know I shouldn't be bothered by such tiny mistakes in her writing, but as a very well-read person, I can't help noticing flaws.
Example:
"Come in," Carlisle's voice invited.
Invited? Are you serious? That's a transitive verb. Transitive verbs have objects, and you CANNOT use them in the place of an intransitive word like "said" or "called," which would be acceptable in that case. There are hundreds of other similar mistakes I've spotted, and they are so irritating that I cringe at the very thought of reading Twilight again. Ugh.
EDIT: Also, J.K. Rowling is amazing. The only thing I don't think she's mastered is saying more than the word "said" when describing how characters say things to each other, if that makes any sense. :) She does add adverbs like "nervously" or "excitedly," which is totally fine in my book. Another thing I'd like to add is that the plot of the Harry Potter series is so intricate and complex, making it (in my eyes) more sophisticated than Twilight, of which the plot, I feel, is rather lousy. Whiny girl meets sexy vampire, they fall in love even though sexy vampire wants to eat her, they get married and have a kid. Oh, and whiny girl transforms into whiny vampire. Yay.
Plus, Twilight is so unrealistic compared to Harry Potter (making sure to take into account the fact that these books are both fantasy, lol). In both books, some kind of war occurs. In Twilight, it's either a war between vampires and werewolves/vampires and mean vampires; in Harry Potter, it's a war between good people and bad people - violent wars, in any case. In Twilight, literally no one dies (with the exception of Irina, but nobody likes her, so it's okay). In Harry Potter, everybody you love and cherish dies (excepting, of course, all the bad ones who got killed) and it's heartbreaking. Dumbledore, Fred, Hedwig, Moody, Sirius, Lupin, Tonks, Snape, Colin, Cedric, James & Lily (who technically don't die in the series, but we love them anyway), Frank Bryce, Dobby, Florean Fortescue, Amelia Bones, Hepzibah Smith, and Mrs. Abbott (Hannah Abbott's mother). That's all I can think of. In any case, we all love them and miss them, and they weren't typically *supposed* to die, but they did because it's war. Please excuse me while I go wail over these peoples' deaths. Especially Fred. And Snape.
I have to admit that I do like the Twilight series... more than I need to (I have tickets to New Moon for weeks)... but when I first started reading this I automatically thought Sirius Black... I think I just restored my faith in myself. Harry Potter FTW! :)
I thought of Sirius as soon as I saw "Black" :) Like someone else said, I think I'd rather name him Regulus than Jacob, just because it would annoy me for people to think me obsessed with Twilight. (Don't get me wrong, I like them, but some people go too far. VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE.)
Both novels are well written and I have no idea why people hate on Twilight so much. If you hate it so much, no one is forcing you to read the books/see the movie (soon to be movies). I know lots of people that did not like Harry Potter for one reason or another, but they are not as radical at hating Harry Potter. They just choose not to give money to the organization. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but people are going to like Twilight no matter what you say.
That being said, if you like Twilight, name the kid Jacob. If Twilight is actually a fad, you can use the common nickname for Jacob, "Jack."
the main reason harry potter was so popular was because it was the first group of children's books that were long and really made kids love to read.
what really bothers me about twilight is that people compare it to harry potter so much. they're totally different. I've never read the twilight books, so I cant say anything about how well written or not it is.. but what it has created is a fad in loads of young adult novels to be about vampires; that's what i really dislike about it.
I was neutral on the subject until people started shoving Twilight down my throat. I could care less if somebody likes it, but I don't appreciate people telling me that I should like it. I'm "entitled to [my] own opinion" too. Nobody here is saying that anyone should hate Twilight. I'm here saying that I do hate Twilight. I totally agree with afsd94. I despise the HP/Twilight comparisons. One has nothing to do with the other. Different writing styles, different plots, different settings, and different characters. The only thing they have in common is that dude that played Cedric now plays the sparkly vampire guy.
I'm glad people can coherently state an argument without being immature. Especially when it's a HP vs Twilight argument. I do have to say though, Harry Potter is my favorite of the two.
why not name the kid Sirius Jacob Black? if you like both series anyway.. :)
Cuz it's the concept of the matter. Haha. Plus, it just doesn't sound right. I'd say if I were to put any part of the name in my kids name, I'd have to name it fully to the character. Does that make sense? i.e. Sirius Orion or Scorpius Hyyperion (my absolute favorite!)
I have been trying to get my friend to read the harry potter series for the last two years. She won't even try it because she thinks that twilight is better. =(
Why, JKR, why did Sirius have to die?
And as far as the Harry Potter vs Twilight debate goes, Twilight is an addiction. Believe me, I was there before the madness started. But, it's one of those things that once you step back and take a deep breath, you kind of wonder where your sanity fled to. Harry Potter is...well, pretty indescribable, to be honest. I don't know how it is for a lot of you people, but I started reading Harry Potter when I was eight. Now, I'm a freshman in college and I don't think I've loved the books more. A lot of it is this nostalgic happiness. I mean, how many of you remember going to see the first movie - in theaters? Being around for that entire phenomenon from the books to the movies and now seeing it all draw to a close makes Harry Potter so special. Twilight mania will fade, and relatively quickly. Harry Potter will endure, if only because in the next ten, twenty years there will be a sudden upsurge in the popularity of names such as "Sirius," "Remus," "Harry," "Hermione," "Ron," and ad nauseam.
And now I climb off my soapbox with a bow.
I totally agree. Harry Potter is mostly nostalgia incarnate. Same concept as my parents buying an old tin Star Trek lunchbox from a yard sale. I don't believe either series will totally die, and the names "Bella", "Jacob", and "Edward" may recieve the same surge as "Harry" and "Ron" just as the name "Kirk" did in the 1970s.
I am not saying that these series are anything alike. They are all special in their own way. The only reason that people compare Harry Potter to Twilight (and I compare these two to Star Trek) is because of the stir they caused in young people, not because of the content. Comparing the content is like comparing apples and oranges.
I also started reading Harry Potter when I was eight. I also read Twilight when my girlfriend found it, before all of the craziness started. I enjoyed both series. There are fanatics for both sides, but these fanatics are usually the people who read one and not the other. Read both and see what you think before you start badmouthing one. That's all I ask of people.
I appreciate it when people can actually muster up the courage to read something before they critisize. I agree that Twilight has a certain kind of spell to it; I read it for the sake of being in the loop even though I knew I would hate it--even though I did hate it. Whilst reading it, I was sent into this total obsession I could escape. Posters hung on my walls, I saw the movie on opening day, and once I finished the fourth book I realized how utterly stupid I had been and how terribly written the whole thing was. I don't even know what posessed me to read it, but somehow I managed to make it through and turned into what I loathed most along the way.
Harry Potter was way different, I felt more than just non-ironic enjoyment when I read it, y'know? That's why I can't say much about it here, because it just seems so much more well written and Twilight pales in comparison, so much so that I don't even think we need to compare the two.
I have to say, i read harry potter first, and almost immediately fell in love with the series; having now read it at least five or six times, and i am a first year varsity student. I read the Stephanie Meyers series only because i was intrigued to find out about the craze that excited so many young girls (and boys, but it's a secret) to read. I was truly disappointed to find out that the cause for all this fanatic reading was actually a poor excuse of literature. However, the story-line of Twilight is fascinating, and it captivated me for the week it took me to read the entire series; and i can now fully understand why it is such a craze.
However, to end my argument i have a few equations to suggest:
7 > 4
Wands > Teeth and sparkly skin
Lord Voldemort > Italian vampire people (have forgotten their names? Volturi? i dunno)
J.K. Rowling net worth > Stephanie Meyer net worth
So all in all:
Harry Potter FTW.
Please excuse grammatical errors
Manchester Untied will win the Premier League
I have to say that I'm a massive Twilight fan but Harry Potter comes first in my book.
I will say that it bothers me the extent to which these books are compared. Their is nothing similar about theses books besides them both being fantasy novels and comparing them is futile.
And the critique of writing styles annoys me as well, yes both authors have errors but lets face it Britain has a more correct writing style, while America's is more lax (I'm American so don't hate, it's a valid observation statistically speaking) I mean Britain has Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Lewis Carrol, Charles Dickens, Anna Sewell, and Tolkien, and yes America has talented authors but not in the abundance of Britain; outside of Poe, Hemingway, Irving, and Twain America really doesn't have much in the way of classic literature. And traditionally speaking most modern authors (traditionally...modern oxymoron much??) in America have a generally less correct writing style than British authors do. Personally i think these two books should be looked at seperatly they were never meant to be compared so don't.
I am the kind of person who never rereads a book twice. I have made an exception for harry potter which i have read countless times. HArry potter has set the standerd for any book the has to do with wizards. i was once reading a book were instead of the wizards having magical powers they had the ability to summon demons to do the work for them and as i'm comparing this to harry potter thinking WTF. what the hell is this, it doesn't make any sense.
