MyLifeIsAverage - Life is pretty normal today

I remember back in elementary school when I needed to know how to spell a word, my teachers would always tell me to look it up in a dictionary. I never got how this made sense. If I can't spell it, how will I find it in something sorted by spelling? MLIA

My teachers always told me to try sounding it out. I guess their logic was that if I could figure out how the beginning of the word was spelled I'd be able to look it up.

My dad used to say that, and then would tell my mom not to help me figure out the spelling... It would drive me nuts, since I would inevitably have one of the first three letters wrong... Total Average!

When I asked the spelling of a word, my teacher would start to spell out the word 'dictionary.' You usually get to the 5th letter before realizing what's happening and then pick up a dictionary. haha

I never quite understood that either, but at least looking up a word helps teach you how to use a dictionary. Granted, I use mine to check definitions more often than spelling.

My mom would tell me to look it up. Then I asked her how am i supposed to look it up if i cant even spell it? So she gave me the first couple of letters anyway.
